Quick Baking Tips & Fun Fact

Fun Fact

Making bagel chips is one of the oldest baker's tricks for reducing food waste, transforming hard, day-old loaves into a gourmet, shelf-stable snack in minutes.

Key Baking Tips

  • Slice Against the Grain: Slice your bagels horizontally (the opposite way you would cut them for toasting) so you get nice, wide rounds. Place the flat side down on your board for stability before slicing super thin.

  • Watch the Clock Closely: Because these slices are so thin, bake times move fast. Keep a close eye on them during the 5 to 7-minute mark so they don't burn.

  • Carryover Cooking: They may still feel slightly flexible straight out of the oven, but don't overbake them! They will crisp up completely as they cool on the hot pan.

Ingredients

  • Stale or day-old bagels

  • Avocado oil or olive oil (in a spray bottle or mister)

  • Desired seasonings (such as garlic powder, sea salt, everything bagel seasoning, or parmesan)

Equipment & Supplies Used

Step-by-Step Instructions

Slice & Prep

Slice Horizontally: Take your stale bagels and slice them in half horizontally (the opposite way you would from toasting them).

Cut Thin Strips: Place the flat side down on your cutting board for stability, and carefully slice them into super thin, even pieces.

Season & Bake

Arrange on Pan: Lay the thin bagel slices flat in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Oil & Season: Lightly spritz the slices with avocado or olive oil, then sprinkle your desired seasonings evenly across the top.

Bake: Bake at 400°F (200°C) for 5 to 7 minutes, monitoring closely since thinner slices bake much faster.

Cool & Store

Remove from the oven and let them finish crisping up as they cool on the pan. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
